When chemicals or other hazardous substances are used at work it can put people’s health at risk. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 is the law that states employers are required to control exposure to hazardous substances to prevent ill health.
In a recent announcement, the NHS has drawn attention to the misuse of products that contain polymer gel.
Superabsorbent polymer gel granules can be used to reduce spillage onto bedding and clothing when patients use urine bottles or vomit bowls, or when staff move fluid-filled containers (eg washbowls or bedpans). If the gel granules are put in the mouth, they expand on contact with saliva risking airway obstruction. Sadly as a result of use, there have been a number of reported incidents of ingestion by vulnerable patients resulting in fatalities and/or emergency treatment.
Products that may contain polymer gel, or that work in a similar way are:
SANITAIRE ABSORBENT POWDER
EMERGENCY BIO HAZARD CLEAN-UP KIT
Whilst we at CJS, do not know the complete stories concerning these incidents, it does reinforce the need for correct COSHH procedures to be adhered to so that catastophic results do not occur.
This is where we can help you. Here at CJS Portsmouth, we have a team of competent trainers qualified to train your staff in COSHH Awareness. Whilst we do charge a nominal fee for the training session, I’m sure you will agree that it is worth it to put your mind at rest.
Remember all chemical products are dangerous if not used correctly!
