DB Blog #17 – Plastic (Not So) Fantastic

It’s never easy to say goodbye, but here at CJS, we are gradually saying goodbye to plastic.

I’ve been very excited to see the environmentally focused development in products over the last few years, but the most impressive changes have to be in our catering range. The single use plastic responsible for damage to our oceans is on the way out, and biodegradable and recyclable options are prevailing.

In England we use around 4.7 billion plastic straws and 316 million plastic stirrers every year, each item taking hundreds of years to break down (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, 2018). These items decomposing slowly in landfill is one issue, but many plastic products end up polluting our beaches and countryside.

Fortunately this is changing. In preparation for the restrictions on the sale of plastic catering equipment being introduced next year, we are no longer purchasing plastic accessories and are investing time into researching the best quality, yet affordable, eco friendly replacements for our customers.

We already stock a variety of biodegradable and paper straws, alongside wooden stirrers. If you would like any advice on switching out your plastic, please talk to your sales executive or phone the sales team who will be happy to help you!

There is currently a small amount of plastic catering equipment left in stock, so if you are not quite ready to say goodbye we can still supply plastic straws, stirrers and toothpicks at sale price (whilst stocks last).

For more information on any products mentioned in this blog, please phone the sales team on 023 9243 4505, speak to your sales executive, visit our trade shop, or email us
