Sustainable Terms and Their Meanings
- Biodegradable – Means that a substance or object that is able to decay naturally and without harming the environment
- Carbon Footprint – Relates to the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that is generated by our actions
- Carbon Offset – Looks to reduce the GHG* emissions or increase carbon storage by planting trees etc. to compensate for any emissions that occurs
- Compostable – Something that is compostable can be used as compost when it decays
- *Greenhouse Gas (GHG) – Is a compound gas that traps heat or longwave radiation in the atmosphere
- Natural – Anything that is not man-made, in other words, derived from nature
- Net Positive – Operating commercially but putting more back into the society, the environment and the global economy than it takes out
- Net Zero – Achieving a balance between the carbon emitted into the atmosphere and the carbon removed from it
- Plant Derived – Is where the ingredient started out as a whole plant
- Recyclable plastics; PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a strong plastic than can be recycled; rPET (recycled polyethylene tetraphyte) is produced from 100% recycled post-consumer waste; HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is a recycled plastic usually safe for food contact; PCR plastic (Post Consumer Resin) is plastic that is made from post-consumer waste.

- Reuse – Taking old items and rather than throwing them away, find a new purpose for them
- Sustainability – Where we can meet our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations, taking into account social and environmental factors
